KL Flash Flood: Tree Collapse Damages Home in Sungai Long

(Kuala Lumpur, July 18) As the KL flash flood swept through the Klang Valley this afternoon, a separate incident unfolded in Kampung Batu 3, Bandar Sungai Long, where a large tree collapsed onto a residential home, though no casualties were reported.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director Asrul said the department received an emergency call at 4:18pm and dispatched nine firefighters along with a fire engine, arriving at the scene at 4:40pm. Responders found two trees had fallen and blocked the road, while a third had come down directly onto a house. Firefighters used chainsaws to clear the fallen trees, bringing the situation under control by 4:45pm.

The incident occurred as the broader Klang Valley grappled with a sudden and heavy downpour that triggered severe flash flooding, with Petaling Jaya the worst affected. Areas across Petaling Jaya, Kelana Jaya and Damansara saw floodwaters rise quickly along major roads, submerging vehicles up to half their height and forcing drivers to either crawl through the water or divert into indoor car parks. Traffic along affected routes came to a near standstill. The outdoor dining area of Mid Valley Megamall was also flooded, along with nearby Jalan Gasing, while Bukit Lanjan in Shah Alam and old Jalan Gasing in Kuala Lumpur reported similar conditions, with flood sirens sounding in parts of Shah Alam by evening.

Meanwhile, the Medan Selera Jaya 223 hawker centre in Petaling Jaya — long considered a flood hotspot — saw water levels climb to 2 metres, its worst flooding of the year. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director Asrulriza said a report was received at 4:35pm, with 12 firefighters dispatched and arriving about 20 minutes later to find the water at its peak, though already beginning to subside. No one was trapped or injured, and no evacuation was required. This was the third flood at the hawker centre this year, following earlier incidents in April and May.

The Department of Irrigation and Drainage also reported that, as of 8:15pm, three rivers across four monitoring stations in Selangor had exceeded alert levels, prompting calls for residents in affected areas to prepare for possible evacuation. The Malaysian Meteorological Department issued a parallel weather warning at 4:40pm, forecasting continued thunderstorms and heavy rain over Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and several other states through 7pm.
