Venezuela Earthquake Leads Global Cluster of Powerful Tremors

Hot . International Article

CARACUS, June 26 — Four powerful earthquakes struck different regions of the world within a period of just over seven hours, but it was the Venezuela earthquake — or rather, two earthquakes in under a minute — that caused the most devastating loss of life and destruction, with the capital Caracas left in ruins and the death toll feared to be far higher than the figures so far confirmed by authorities.

Venezuela earthquake

The Venezuelan tremors struck near Montalbán in the north of the country, approximately 160 kilometres from Caracas. The first, measuring 7.2 in magnitude, struck at 22:04 GMT on June 24 at a depth of 10 kilometres. Within seconds, a second tremor measuring 7.5 followed at virtually the same location and depth, delivering a compound blow that overwhelmed the structural integrity of buildings across a wide area. Many residential blocks, caught between two major seismic impacts in rapid succession, simply could not withstand the forces placed upon them.

The Venezuela earthquake killed at least 164 people according to the latest official figures, with 971 reported injured. The US Geological Survey, however, warned in its red alert assessment that the true death toll was statistically most likely to fall between 10,000 and 100,000, a projection that reflected the severity of the shaking, the density of population in affected areas and the shallow depth of the earthquake’s origin. Economic losses were forecast at between two and 20 percent of Venezuela’s GDP.

Venezuela’s acting president declared a national state of emergency shortly after the tremors, suspending schools and non-essential activities and directing all available government resources toward relief and rescue. The interior minister confirmed via national television that the quakes had caused building collapses in multiple Venezuelan cities, with Caracas’s eastern districts among the worst affected. Rescue operations continued into the night, with firefighters, local government personnel and volunteers all playing a part in the search for survivors.

In Japan, earthquake monitors recorded tremors off the Iwate coast that were subsequently revised to a magnitude of 7.7. A tsunami warning was issued, the Tohoku Shinkansen was suspended, and nuclear plants near the epicentre were placed on emergency monitoring status. Northern California also experienced a notable earthquake during the same period. The near-simultaneous occurrence of major seismic events across multiple tectonic zones prompted discussion among geologists about whether the events were coincidental or indicative of broader patterns of seismic activity.
